After four consecutive political advertisements last night, I turned off the television in frustration. You would think after viewing a political commercial, a potential voter would have a better idea of how to vote. Not true. None of these ads suggested that I vote for anyone or even mentioned a specific office. All they did was explain how terrible a particular person was and what a poor choice they would be.
We used to say, “If you can’t say something good about someone, don’t say anything at all.” Do we even use that saying anymore?
I wonder if we could start a national campaign to boycott negative political campaigning. It would not be hard. Rather than producing an ad that condemns the opponent, spend the time and money explaining what you intend to do.
Perhaps if campaigning was designed to explain our positions and plans rather than condemning the actions and personality of the opponent, we would be in a position to elect better folks. As it stands now, all we can hope to do is select the lesser of the evils. The fact that all a politician has to offer is the depravity of the opponent speaks volumes.
